A Surprising Connection Between Sleep Habits and Alzheimer's Disease Discovered
New research has shown that sleep quality and duration can affect the impact of genes associated with Alzheimer's disease. A study in Australia found that sleep patterns can influence genetic risks associated with Alzheimer's disease. The research focused on the AQP4 gene, which plays a crucial role in the brain's fluid circulation and waste removal system. This system is more active during sleep and is thought to help remove harmful proteins associated with Alzheimer's from the brain. The researchers examined 13 common variants of the AQP4 gene and compared them with the participants' sleep habits, brain images, and cognitive performance. The results showed that individuals with certain genetic variants who slept less experienced faster decline in the brain's gray matter. In some individuals, longer sleep latency was associated with reduced brain volume. The lead author of the study, Dr. Ayeisha Milligan Armstrong, noted, "What matters is not just what genes you have, but how they interact with your lifestyle. The same genetic trait can have a beneficial or harmful effect depending on a person's sleep patterns."
