US and Ukraine Discuss Defense Agreement
US NATO Ambassador Matthew Whitaker met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy to discuss a significant defense agreement. Whitaker, along with Zelenskiy and senior Ukrainian officials, discussed the details of an agreement proposed by US President Donald Trump regarding the supply of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Patriot air defense systems. Whitaker stated on his social media account, “Following the NATO summit, we met with President Zelenskiy and Ukraine’s senior officials in Kiev. We discussed the conclusion of President Trump’s agreement on drones and the progress on the supply of interceptors for Patriot systems.” After this meeting, US General Dan Caine announced that the US had not yet made a decision on Zelenskiy’s request for additional air defense systems. Meanwhile, Zelenskiy had sent a letter to US President Donald Trump and the US Congress in June, highlighting the increasing ammunition shortage in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Zelenskiy had requested an increase in the shipment of air defense systems and their respective missiles but later stated that he had not received any response from Congress or the White House.
