How Long-Term Financial Struggles Affect the Brain

Prolonged financial hardships during adulthood can impact not only daily life but also brain health. A 70-year study in the UK found that individuals experiencing chronic financial difficulties had lower memory performance and showed changes in the brain associated with tissue loss in old age.The study followed approximately 3,000 people born in 1946 until their 70s, evaluating their income levels and ability to meet basic needs at different stages of life. Researchers found that those who experienced low income or financial hardship multiple times during adulthood scored lower on memory and cognitive speed tests at age 53.Among around 400 people who underwent brain imaging between the ages of 69 and 74, those who lived with low income for extended periods had larger brain ventricles filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Scientists suggest this could be related to the shrinkage of surrounding brain tissue. The study highlighted that reducing long-term economic stress could be a preventable factor in maintaining brain health. However, researchers noted that this study did not prove that financial hardship directly causes brain changes, but rather showed a strong link between the two.
