Prolonged Sitting May Increase Cancer Death Risk

A comprehensive study conducted in England found that prolonged periods of uninterrupted sitting or inactivity may be associated with an increased risk of cancer death.
The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS Medicine, analyzed movement data collected over approximately 12 years from over 91,000 individuals in the UK Biobank database using wearable devices. According to the study, periods of inactivity lasting longer than 30 minutes at a time were linked to an increased risk of cancer death.Dr. Frederick Ho from the University of Glasgow stated that prolonged uninterrupted sitting is a risk factor that warrants particular attention. Ho noted, 'The good news is that even breaking up sitting time with short walks every half hour can have a protective effect.'The researchers emphasized that current health guidelines tend to focus on moderate and high-intensity exercise, but light physical activities should not be overlooked. The study found that replacing prolonged periods of inactivity with light physical activities can yield positive results.
