The Impact of Taking the Stairs on Heart Health

The habit of taking the stairs can make a significant difference in terms of heart health. Researchers from the University of East Anglia and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital evaluated the link between stair climbing habits and the risk of heart disease and death by analyzing the data of hundreds of thousands of people. The study found that people who took the stairs had a 39% lower risk of death from heart and vascular diseases and a 24% lower risk of death from any cause. Taking the stairs was also associated with a lower risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.Professor Vassilios Vassiliou from the University of East Anglia Norwich Medical School stated that heart and vascular diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide but can be largely prevented with healthy lifestyle habits. The researchers noted that even short periods of physical activity can be beneficial for health and that short stair climbs can be incorporated into daily routines. The study suggested that climbing the stairs about six times a day may be associated with the greatest benefit, but the researchers emphasized that more research is needed to determine the ideal amount of stair climbing.
