New Research Reveals Critical Role of Vitamin C in Brain Health

A recent study has shed light on the potential link between vitamin C levels in the blood and brain structure. Conducted in Japan, the research involved over 2,000 elderly adults and aimed to explore the relationship between vitamin C and brain health. The study found that individuals with lower vitamin C levels tended to have less grey matter in brain regions associated with memory and attention, as well as weaker neural connections. While the findings do not directly prove that vitamin C protects the brain, they suggest that a healthy diet may help slow down age-related cognitive decline.Tomohiro Shintaku, a member of the research team, stated, 'Our study shows that higher plasma vitamin C levels are associated with better preservation of the structural connections in the default mode network, a key brain network involved in cognitive function.'Shintaku added, 'This finding presents an exciting hypothesis that a vitamin C-rich diet may support brain health and reduce age-related cognitive decline in older adults.'
