Do Omega-3 Supplements Have the Desired Impact on Brain Health?
A notable study has been published regarding omega-3 fish oil supplements used by millions to protect their brain health. Scientists reported that while the supplements do reach the brain, they do not strengthen memory or provide the expected protection against Alzheimer's risk. The study, conducted by USC Keck Medicine researchers and published in the eBioMedicine journal, found that omega-3 fish oil supplements did not provide the expected benefits for older adults at risk of Alzheimer's.The study followed 365 people between the ages of 55 and 80 for two years, giving them high doses of omega-3 supplements and placebos. At the end of the study, the group taking fish oil supplements showed no significant advantage in terms of memory, cognitive abilities, or brain health compared to the group not taking omega-3.The study's lead author, Dr. Hussein Naji Yassine, Director of the USC Personalized Brain Health Center, said, "We all wish there was a magical solution to prevent Alzheimer's, but our findings suggest that fish oil supplements do not seem to protect brain health."The researchers first examined whether the omega-3 in the supplements actually reached the brain.Measurements showed that after six months, the levels of omega-3 in the cerebrospinal fluid had increased by an average of 17 percent, confirming that the omega-3 fatty acids did reach the brain. However, cognitive tests and brain imaging done after two years found that this had no positive effect on memory, cognitive performance, or the shrinking of the hippocampus associated with Alzheimer's.Dr. Yassine suggested that omega-3 fatty acids might be more effective when consumed as part of a Mediterranean-style diet rather than as a supplement alone.
