New Research Sheds Light on Obesity and Alzheimer's Link

A recent study in the US has found that obesity may accelerate Alzheimer's disease through certain fat molecules that reach the brain. According to the research, obesity not only affects metabolism but also alters the biological signals sent to the brain. This change can trigger mechanisms that increase damage related to Alzheimer's disease. The study detected that the levels of a type of fat molecule called phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) in cell membranes increase with obesity and can reach the brain through small carrier structures. Once in the brain, these molecules can disrupt communication between nerve cells, weaken the immune system, and promote the accumulation of amyloid proteins.
The research also observed that restoring the balance of PE molecules improves brain function and cognitive performance in Alzheimer's models. Scientists suggest that treatments targeting these fat molecules or the mechanisms that transport them to the brain could offer a new approach to reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease associated with obesity.
