Scientists Discover Descendants of Ancient Sea Creatures Under Antarctica's 'Blood Falls'
The mysterious 'Blood Falls' in Antarctica has been the subject of scientific interest for many years. Research conducted under this waterfall has revealed that the descendants of ancient sea creatures that were trapped under the ice thousands of years ago are still alive. The 'Blood Falls' flows out of the Taylor Glacier into the Bonney Lake. The water of this waterfall has a high salinity level and is rich in iron, which causes it to oxidize and turn red when it comes into contact with air. Under the glacier, there is a unique ecosystem consisting of numerous microorganisms of marine origin, such as diatoms, haptophytes, dinoflagellates, and silicates. These microorganisms normally live in oceans, but they were isolated and trapped under the ice when the glacier advanced, and they have survived for thousands of years. The research has biologically confirmed that the mysterious red water is indeed of marine origin and has been sealed under the advancing ice sheets until the present day. 'This discovery sheds light on how life on Earth was able to survive the massive climate changes that occurred over millions of years.' The research team analyzed 167 water, sediment, ice, and air samples collected from Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valleys and surrounding areas. As a result of DNA sequencing studies, thousands of different microorganism species were detected in the 'Blood Falls'.
