40-Year-Old Fossil Identified as Antarctica's First Dinosaur Bone

A fossil discovered in Antarctica in 1985, but whose identity could not be determined, has been revealed to be the continent's first dinosaur bone after approximately 40 years. Scientists have announced that this fossil is a tail vertebra from a young titanosaur that lived around 82 million years ago.
The fossil was found on James Ross Island by the British Antarctic Survey. However, at the time, the bone's origin could not be understood, so it was stored in the geological collection in Cambridge.
Collection manager Dr. Mark Evans noticed that the fossil's shape was different from that of usual marine reptiles and consulted with Prof. Paul Barrett from the Natural History Museum in England. After examinations, it was confirmed that the bone was a tail vertebra belonging to the titanosaur group, a type of large sauropod dinosaur.
Researchers estimate that the dinosaur was approximately 7 meters long based on the size of the vertebra. It is considered that this could be either a young individual or a smaller adult titanosaur.
Titanosaurs are among the largest land animals to have lived on Earth, with some species reaching lengths of up to 35 meters and weighing up to 60 tons. Scientists emphasize that dinosaur fossils are extremely rare in Antarctica and that the thick ice sheet on the continent makes paleontological research very challenging.
