The Mediterranean Diet's Impact on Psychological Well-being

The Mediterranean Diet's Impact on Psychological Well-being
In addition to its known benefits for heart and metabolic health, the Mediterranean diet has been found to have a significant role in mental well-being. A study conducted by University College London (UCL) and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) found that this dietary model significantly increased psychological resilience and well-being, even during stressful periods. The Mediterranean diet has long been recognized for its positive effects on physical health. Now, its strong connection to psychological processes has come to the forefront. Published in the prestigious medical journal "BMJ Open", the study analyzed data from 3,296 adults aged 50 and over, as part of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) in England. The results showed that individuals who followed a Mediterranean-style diet had higher psychological resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers controlled for factors such as age, sex, education level, income, physical activity, smoking, body mass index, chronic diseases, and symptoms of depression. The analysis revealed that the positive relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and psychological well-being remained significant.Notably, during periods of high stress, such as the pandemic, individuals who followed this dietary model experienced less disruption to their mental balance compared to others. Experts emphasize that the findings suggest that dietary habits may serve as a protective shield against chronic stress and anxiety.
