US Introduces AI in Emergency Call Systems

In the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, the emergency call system is being revamped with AI support. As part of the new application, some individuals calling 911 may first encounter an AI-powered system instead of a human.
The Orleans Parish Communication District (OPCD), which receives over a thousand emergency calls daily, has begun testing this new system to reduce call volume and enable operators to focus on more critical cases. The city administration had previously introduced AI on the non-emergency 311 line in April, with around 50% of calls being merely information requests.
The system utilizes Carbyne's "AI Emergency Call Triage" technology. The caller is asked if they are calling about an ongoing specific incident. If the response is "yes", current information can be shared, and if it's a different emergency, the call is directly transferred to a human operator.
