Toxic Smoke Alert in Greece After Fire

A 'toxic smoke' warning has been issued by the authorities in Greece after a fire broke out near the city of Thessaloniki. The Atmospheric Information Center, AtmoHub, in Greece has warned that the dense smoke rising from the damaged recycling facilities and industrial materials in the Oraiokastro area poses a significant health risk. The smoke from the fire is expected to significantly decrease air quality, with a substantial increase in fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) levels. Professor Dimosthenis Sarigiannis from the Department of Environmental Engineering at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki stated that the smoke consists of very fine particles produced by incomplete combustion. Sarigiannis explained that the burning of the forest area, along with the recycling facilities and industrial materials, creates a highly toxic mixture due to the presence of detergents, oils, and recyclable materials. This mixture contains organic compounds that cause irritation to the eyes and throat, as well as carcinogenic substances like benzene, furan, and dioxin, according to Sarigiannis, who warned that children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems should avoid going outside unless necessary. The authorities are urging citizens to keep their doors and windows closed and avoid being outdoors unless necessary, as strongly advised.
