Passenger Plane's Engine Blade Breaks Off: Cabin Window Shatters and a Passenger is Sucked Out

A Ryanair plane flying from Thessaloniki, Greece, narrowly avoided a major disaster when its engine blade broke off during ascent, shattering a cabin window and sucking out a passenger.The incident occurred when the plane, operated by Malta Air, was climbing after taking off from Thessaloniki, bound for Memmingen, Germany. Debris from the broken engine blade pierced the cabin window, causing a sudden loss of pressure that pulled Serbian national Ljubisa Karovic's head and right shoulder out of the window.Karovic's wife, Svetlana Grkovic Maksimovic, and two other passengers managed to pull him back into the plane, saving his life. The flight crew declared an emergency and made a safe landing back at Thessaloniki International Airport. According to a preliminary report by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the engine had undergone an ultrasonic inspection in May and no defects were found.
