New Hope for Parkinson's Disease Treatment: Stem Cell Transplantation
Scientists from Sweden and the UK have shown that transplanting dopamine cells derived from stem cells into the brain may be both feasible and safe for treating Parkinson's disease. In this study, researchers from Lund University in Sweden and Cambridge University in the UK conducted a clinical trial called STEM-PD, where 8 Parkinson's patients received stem cell-derived dopamine cells, and no serious side effects were observed in the first year of follow-up. Parkinson's disease causes the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells, leading to symptoms such as slowed movement, stiffness, tremors, and difficulty walking. The goal of the researchers is for the transplanted cells to mature over time and replace the lost dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain. The lead researcher, Prof. Dr. Malin Parmar, stated that the results could be a significant milestone for regenerative medicine. Prof. Dr. Roger Barker from the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at Cambridge University described this study as an 'exciting new era' for Parkinson's patients.
