Unlocking the Power of the Mediterranean Diet: Supporting Heart and Brain Health

The Mediterranean diet has long been recognized for its potential to reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cognitive decline. However, the underlying biological mechanisms by which this diet exerts its effects have not been fully understood.
Researchers from the USC Leonard Davis Gerontology School have identified a potential biological mechanism that may explain how the Mediterranean diet contributes to heart and brain health. The study found that older adults who adhered closely to the Mediterranean diet had higher levels of two small proteins, Humanin and SHMOOSE, in their blood.
Previous research has suggested that these proteins may have protective effects against cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. The study also found that higher consumption of olive oil, fish, and legumes was associated with higher levels of Humanin. Additionally, higher olive oil consumption and lower intake of refined carbohydrates were linked to higher levels of SHMOOSE.
The researchers noted that the study was observational and did not prove that the Mediterranean diet directly causes these biological changes. However, the findings may provide a foundation for future studies to develop personalized nutrition approaches.
