Scientists Discover Cellular Cause of Aging: Phosphatidylcholine Decline Impairs Mitochondrial Function

A recent study in Germany has identified a key reason behind the decline in mitochondrial function during aging. As people age, the decrease in phosphatidylcholine, a fatty molecule, impairs the function of mitochondria, the energy-producing centers of cells.
Researchers found that supplementing experimental worms with phosphatidylcholine or choline, which can be converted into phosphatidylcholine in the body, resulted in more youthful and flexible mitochondria. This finding suggests that phosphatidylcholine supplementation may have potential in slowing or reversing aging. However, the researchers note that it is still too early to say whether phosphatidylcholine or choline supplementation can slow or reverse aging in humans.
The study also found that the decline in phosphatidylcholine levels occurs at different rates in men and women. In men, the decline is gradual, while in women, it becomes more pronounced during menopause. The researchers suggest that this may be related to the energy loss and chronic fatigue commonly experienced during menopause.
