AI Nearly 'Erases' Female Characters from Children's Stories

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Washington found that AI models not only reflect gender biases in children's stories but can also exacerbate them in some cases. The study analyzed 23,800 responses from six different AI models regarding children's stories featuring talking animals. The results showed that female animal characters were present in only 2% of the stories, and AI reinforced existing gender biases in different ways. The AI models were tested to create stories with talking animal characters whose genders were not specified. The analysis of 23,800 AI responses revealed that female animal characters were present in only 2% of the stories, while 41% of the stories featured male characters, and 57% did not specify the characters' genders. According to the researchers, these findings are significant because children's books play a crucial role in shaping perceptions of gender and gender roles at a young age.
