Discovery in the Rainforest: Scientists Uncover a New Species of Monkey

A groundbreaking discovery has taken place in the depths of the Democratic Republic of Congo's rainforest, unveiling a new species of African monkey.
Locally known as 'Likweli' and scientifically referred to as Colobus congoensis, this new species has been found to possess distinct characteristics, including black fur, orange-cream coloration around the mouth and nose, a white patch on the rump, and a unique vocalization.
First sighted in 2008, the confirmation of this species as new came after extensive research conducted between 2018 and 2022.
Scientists highlight that this species, confined to a limited area between the Lomami and Congo rivers, faces significant threats due to the narrowness of its habitat, poaching, and deforestation.
This finding underscores the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect this biologically rich region.
