Mystery Unveiled After 16 Years: Giant Rings Spotted in Venus' Atmosphere

Scientists have re-examined Venus images recorded in 2010 and found evidence of giant concentric rings in the planet's upper atmosphere. The researchers stated that this discovery has not been confirmed yet but could be a significant step in understanding Venus' atmospheric dynamics.A remarkable discovery about Venus' atmosphere was made by re-examining images recorded by the William Herschel Telescope in the Canary Islands in 2010. Dutch researchers analyzed the archived data and detected faint, giant concentric ring patterns surrounding Venus in its upper atmosphere. The study used data from a device developed to measure polarized light. By comparing normal images with polarized light images, scientists found that the ring-like structures only appeared in the polarized light analyses, not in the standard images.The research team simulated how sunlight spreads through the gas layers in Venus' atmosphere using computer modeling. The results showed that small changes in gas density in the atmosphere could create the observed ring patterns. According to the researchers, these density changes could be the result of massive gravity waves stretching thousands of kilometers in Venus' atmosphere.
