A New Political Process in Venezuela: Government and Opposition to Meet on August 1

Following months of political tension in Venezuela, the interim government and a section of the opposition have agreed to begin official negotiations on August 1. The parties aim to create a joint roadmap for strengthening democratic institutions, restructuring the electoral system, and rebuilding the country.
The negotiation process was announced through simultaneous statements by the government-controlled National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez and opposition representatives. The parties intend to establish a common ground for overcoming the country's ongoing political and economic crisis.
The opposition faction stated that the primary objective of the talks is to create a 'roadmap for transition to democracy'. The negotiations will prioritize the reorganization of the electoral system, the restructuring of the National Electoral Council (CNE), and the establishment of guarantees for the equal participation of all political actors in elections.
The opposition delegation will consist of lawmakers who participated in the last National Assembly elections in 2015, in which the opposition won a majority. Dinorah Figuera, who returned to Venezuela in June after approximately eight years of exile, will lead the opposition delegation.
