Death Toll from Twin Earthquakes in Venezuela Approaches 5,000

The number of people who lost their lives in the two major earthquakes that occurred in Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 4,930.Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez made statements on social media about the earthquakes. Rodriguez drew attention to the increasing number of people affected by the disaster. He also mentioned the number of aftershocks, stating that 1,308 aftershocks have been recorded since the earthquakes on June 24. Rodriguez announced that the number of injured people is 16,740.The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that two earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 occurred in Venezuela on June 24, 39 seconds apart. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimated the cost of physical damage caused by the earthquakes to be $6.7 billion in its statement on June 26. As search and rescue efforts continue in the country, the increasing number of deaths and injuries is causing concern.
