Double Earthquake in Venezuela: Experts Draw Comparison to 2023 Kahramanmaraş and Marmara Earthquakes
Venezuela was hit by two severe earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, occurring 39 seconds apart. According to initial reports, at least 32 people lost their lives, 700 were injured, and hundreds are missing. Geology Engineer Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş evaluated these tremors as a "major earthquake pair" and drew a comparison to the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy compared the earthquakes in Venezuela to the 1999 earthquakes and drew a comparison to the Marmara earthquake. Üşümezsoy stated that this event requires considering the 1999 and November earthquakes. The major earthquake that occurred off the coast of Venezuela developed on the right-lateral strike-slip fault system that follows the country's northern coast.
