The Secret to Long Life May Be Found in a Blood Test
It has been discovered that individuals over the age of 100 have higher levels of certain protective bile acids in their blood compared to others, and that some steroids which are expected to decrease with age are preserved. A study conducted by Boston University found a biological signature in the blood of individuals over 100 that is associated with healthy aging. The researchers suggest that this metabolic profile is not just a result of advanced age, but could also be an indicator of a longer and healthier life. The study analyzed blood samples from 213 individuals, including those over 100, their children, and control participants of the same age group. The findings showed that individuals over 100 had higher levels of certain primary and secondary bile acids in their blood, and that the levels of some steroids that are expected to decrease with age were preserved. According to the researchers, this metabolic signature is distinct from the normal aging process and appears to be associated with a lower risk of death. Professor of Medicine Stefano Monti stated, "The measurable chemical traces in our blood are linked to long and healthy life. If we can understand the biological mechanisms that create these traces, we may be able to develop new ways to protect against aging."
