Experts Warn: Toxoplasma Gondii Parasite Can Cause Vision Loss
According to a new scientific study, the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, which affects about one-third of the world's population, can cause serious eye infections and vision loss. Researchers argue that the disease should be classified by the World Health Organization as a 'neglected tropical disease'. A study published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases suggests that the parasite's impact, known as toxoplasmosis, should be included in the WHO's list of 'neglected tropical diseases'. The study found that while toxoplasmosis often has no symptoms, it can cause severe eye infections in some individuals. Experts emphasize that ocular toxoplasmosis is the most common eye infection worldwide and can lead to permanent vision loss. The Toxoplasma gondii parasite is most commonly spread through contaminated water and food. Experts warn that infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, birth defects, and serious health issues. The study estimates that approximately 190,000 babies are born with congenital toxoplasmosis each year. The most severe consequences of the disease are seen in regions with limited access to healthcare and clean water.
