IAEA Confirms Significant Damage in Energodar City
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced that significant damage has been detected in the fire and rescue unit in Energodar, a city neighboring the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized that any military action that undermines nuclear safety and emergency preparedness is “unacceptable”. The IAEA expert team shared their findings on the structural destruction in Energodar, near the plant. The team's report confirmed that the fire department, which plays a vital role in the plant's emergency response capacity, suffered severe damage. The IAEA stated, “This week, our team at the Zaporizhzhia NPP confirmed significant destruction at the fire unit in Energodar, next to the plant. This facility is critical for the plant's emergency response preparedness.” The IAEA experts on the ground were shown the results of the attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the fire and rescue unit in Energodar on June 30. It was noted that the targeted unit is responsible not only for the nuclear plant's emergency response capacity but also for the security of the city where the plant's personnel and their families reside.
