Ukraine Credit Package: 3 Billion Euros in Interest to Be Paid from EU Budget

European Union (EU) Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis announced that approximately 3 billion euros in interest will be paid directly from the EU budget in the coming years for the 90 billion euro credit package provided to Ukraine. This announcement was made at a conference in Poland. Dombrovskis stated that 3 billion euros will be drawn from the EU budget in the coming years to pay the interest on the 90 billion euro credit program for the Kiev administration. Recalling that the European Commission proposed financing the aid to Ukraine with the income from the frozen Russian assets without the need for a legal 'confiscation', Dombrovskis noted that this formula was blocked by Belgium in December 2025.Following this blockage, the EU decided to open a 90 billion euro credit program for Kiev, and the commissioner stated that Russian assets were 'indefinitely' frozen. Brussels is holding these assets as a guarantee for potential 'compensations' that Moscow may pay to Ukraine in the future. Dombrovskis also touched upon the possibility that Ukraine may not be able to repay the credit it will receive in the future. The commissioner stated that current EU legislation leaves the door open for the possibility of seizing and using the frozen Russian assets in such a scenario.
