Who Will Be the Biggest Obstacle to Ukraine's EU Membership?

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the countries providing the most intense military support to Kiev in the conflict with Russia will become the biggest obstacle to Ukraine's European Union membership. Fico emphasized that these countries will be concerned about Ukraine's impact on the EU budget and that Ukraine cannot be prioritized over other candidate countries like Serbia, Montenegro, and Albania.

Fico, who opposes double standards in the candidate process, underlined that Ukraine should not be given priority over countries like Serbia, Montenegro, and Albania, which are more prepared to join the EU.

If Ukraine wants to become a member of the European Union, it certainly has the right to do so. However, it must fulfill all the requirements completely, just like other candidate countries.

According to the announcement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, all EU member states agreed to open the first set of membership talks with Ukraine and Moldova. Ukraine and Moldova were granted candidate status in June 2022.
