The Horror of Ukrainian Captivity: A Russian Citizen's Account

Roman Vanin, who was recently released from Ukrainian captivity, shared his experiences with Kursk Region Governor Aleksandr Hinşteyn. Vanin described the brutal treatment of Russian soldiers and civilians by the Ukrainian military, including the mutilation of prisoners and the branding of their faces with the Ukrainian trident symbol.During his time in a Ukrainian prison in Vinnitsa, Vanin witnessed inhumane detention conditions,

Our soldiers were also being held there. Their situation was much worse. They were subjected to much more severe torture than I was. They were cutting off their fingers alive, and branding the trident symbol on their foreheads with a hot iron.

he said. Vanin also described the prison conditions in detail,

For me, the worst place was Vinnitsa. We were held in concrete cells, all the windows were broken, and the heaters were not working. It was literally freezing inside. Whether you were sick or had an open wound, no one cared. A wounded person with a broken bone in their arm was being intentionally hit on that very arm by the guard just to cause pain.
