Ukraine Energy Crisis: Expert Warns of 'Inevitable' Large-Scale Blackouts

Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been severely damaged. Russian expert Stanislav Mitrahoviç stated that the situation will worsen with each passing winter, and large-scale blackouts are likely. Nuclear power plants currently account for 70 to 80 percent of domestic consumption, making them the safest sector. However, nuclear energy alone struggles to meet demand, as these facilities need to operate in conjunction with other balancing systems like gas, coal, and hydroelectric power plants. According to Ukraine's Energy Ministry, more than 70 percent of thermal power plants and much of the distribution network have been damaged. Mitrahoviç noted that the engineering protection of facilities is only at the second level, designed to counter kamikaze drones, and is insufficient against missile attacks. The expert pointed out that corruption in Ukraine negatively affects the energy sector and the effectiveness of Western aid, while the US has significantly reduced its aid in 2025-2026 compared to 2022-2024, despite the continued support from the EU and other countries.
