Turkey's Nuclear Energy Vision: Developing Local Reactors and Achieving Energy Independence
Turkey is taking critical steps to realize its nuclear energy vision. At the 12th Nuclear Power Plants Summit (NPPES) in Istanbul, industry experts emphasized the importance of developing local reactors, nuclear industry ecosystems, and national roadmaps for energy independence. During the summit, industry representatives evaluated Turkey's future goals in the field of nuclear energy. In the session titled 'From a Technology-Using Country to a Technology-Developing Country: Turkey's National Nuclear Reactor Initiative', industry representatives discussed the steps to be taken in the development of local nuclear reactors and technology production. IC Holding Chairman of the Board Murad Bayar stated that nuclear energy is not just about electricity production, but also has a large technology and industry ecosystem behind it. Bayar emphasized that the projects to be developed must have commercial sustainability. General Manager of Turkey Nuclear Energy Company (TÜNAŞ) Necati Yamaç stated that the most important issue in preparing Turkey's nuclear industry roadmap is the correct analysis of the current production capacity. Yamaç said that answers must be given to the questions 'At what point is our industrial capability today? What products can we produce in the future and compete in international markets?'
