Traffic Insurance Rate Hike: Vehicle Owners Beware

The new premiums for compulsory traffic insurance, which affects millions of vehicle owners, have been announced. Traffic insurance premiums have increased by approximately 4 percent. According to the data published by the Insurance Information and Supervision Center, in Istanbul, someone who wants to own a car must pay 19,071 lira for fourth-class insurance before they can drive. The increase in traffic insurance premiums is of great interest to vehicle owners. In Istanbul, the premium for a risky driver with an internal combustion engine at the zeroth level is 57,213 lira, while the premium for a driver with the lowest risk at the eighth level is 9,535 lira. In other words, the difference between risk and no risk is around 500 percent. In Ankara, the premium for a risky driver with an internal combustion engine at the zeroth level is 55,594 lira, while the premium for a driver with the lowest risk at the eighth level is 9,266 lira. In Izmir, the premium for a risky driver with an internal combustion engine at the zeroth level is 53,974 lira, while the premium for a driver with the lowest risk at the eighth level is 8,996 lira. As of 2026, a fine of 1,246 lira and a ban on vehicle traffic until the deficiency is resolved will be applied.
