Family of Dog Killed in Traffic Accident Wins Compensation in Court

A court case in Edirne, Turkey, has concluded with the family of a dog named 'Gofret' being awarded compensation after the dog was killed in a traffic accident approximately three years ago.The dog, Gofret, was severely injured when the vehicle driven by M.A. collided with it, and despite receiving treatment, the dog unfortunately passed away.The dog's owner, Çiğdem Arda, initiated a lawsuit seeking compensation for the loss of her pet. The Edirne 2nd Civil Court of First Instance evaluated the expert reports and evidence in the file and determined that some of the expenses incurred for the dog's treatment were directly related to the accident and necessary.The court ruled that the driver and the insurance company must pay a total of 16,975 lira in material compensation to the plaintiff. Additionally, the driver was ordered to pay 2,500 lira in non-pecuniary damages for the emotional distress caused by the dog's death.Arda stated that she immediately took her dog to the veterinarian after the accident, while the driver left the scene. She described the ordeal, saying that her dog was trying to cling to life, but its condition worsened about 15 days later, and unfortunately, they were too late when they took it back to the veterinarian.Arda mentioned that the driver was identified through the examination of security cameras and that the driver claimed to have dropped the vehicle's license plate during the accident and did not notice the dog.After a court case that lasted approximately three years, Arda expressed her relief at being deemed rightful and stated that she used the entire compensation amount to purchase food for stray animals, as she could not bring Gofret back but was able to touch the lives of other animals in its name, which made her very proud.Arda, who took care of Gofret's daughter Pena after the dog's death, called on drivers to be more cautious and slow down in residential areas, to take any injured animals to the nearest veterinary clinic, and not to leave them on the side of the road, as the costs could be covered by insurance, and ultimately, they would be found out.
