Traffic Accident Statistics Revealed: Ankara Surpassed Istanbul in Material Damage Accidents

The June traffic accident statistics for 2026 have been announced. With a total of 328,000 accidents throughout the year, it was found that the greatest fault lies with drivers. While speed was determined to be the primary cause of fatal accidents, Ankara surpassed Istanbul in terms of material damage accident rates.According to the monthly traffic statistics bulletin published by the Traffic Department of the General Directorate of Security; when looking at the types of fatal and injurious traffic accidents, it was found that side crashes were the most common. Pedestrian collision rates remained high, and the number of rollovers, skids, and flips was also quite significant.In terms of fault in traffic accidents; drivers had the highest fault rate, followed by pedestrians and passengers. The failure to adjust vehicle speed to road, weather, and traffic conditions was the most common driver fault. Failure to yield at intersections, crossings, and narrow passages was the second most common, while rear-end collisions were the third most common.In fatal and injurious accidents, cars were the most common, followed by motorcycles, vans, and motorbikes. In June, Ankara had the most material damage accidents, followed by Istanbul, Izmir, Bursa, and Antalya.The city with the fewest material damage accidents was Kilis, with 8 accidents. Kilis was followed by Hakkari, Bayburt, and Ardahan. Throughout the year, Ankara had 40,232 accidents, Istanbul had 34,245 accidents, and Izmir had 13,564 accidents.
