The Number of Groups in the Turkish Parliament is Increasing: How Will Legislative Processes Be Affected?

The 28th Legislative Term, which hosts the most political party groups in the history of the Republic, is experiencing a new development that will change the balance of politics. The new party movement led by Özgür Özel will increase the number of party groups in the Parliament to 7. According to the bylaws, a political party must have at least 20 deputies to form a group. Currently, there are AK Party, CHP, DEM Party, MHP, İYİ Party, and Yeniyol Group (in cooperation with Saadet and Gelecek Parties) in the Parliament. With the participation of the new party, the 7th group will be established. This development will reshape the balance of all legislative activities, from the speaking time in the Parliament to the membership of commissions, from the decisions of the Consultative Board to the determination of the Parliament's agenda.
