Confronting the Past: Adolf Hitler's Birthplace Transformed into Police Station

Austria has transformed the birthplace of Adolf Hitler into a police station, following an extensive renovation costing approximately 20 million euros, in an effort to prevent the building from becoming a neo-Nazi pilgrimage site. Located in Braunau am Inn, the building's new purpose aims to sever any connection to Hitler. The Austrian government purchased the building in 2017 and began renovations in 2019, with the goal of preventing it from becoming a neo-Nazi magnet. However, the decision has sparked diverse opinions and criticisms among the public. The building, now officially open and housing regional and local police units, was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by about 100 people, including Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. According to Stephan Mlczoch, Head of the History Department at the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, the renovation aimed to eliminate any connection to Adolf Hitler and demystify the building. Some critics argue that changing the building's purpose does not erase its historical significance. Johannes Waidbacher expressed his belief that the general public in Braunau has accepted and can live with this decision. In front of the building, a memorial stone from the Mauthausen Concentration Camp bearing the inscription 'Never again fascism' remains in place, alongside a new 'Police' sign. This transformation is seen as a significant step by Austria to confront its difficult past and move towards the future.
