Historic Sümela Monastery Reopens to Visitors

The historic Sümela Monastery in Trabzon has reopened to visitors after the first phase of maintenance and security work was completed. The comprehensive restoration work at Sümela Monastery will continue according to the planned program.
Expert mountaineering teams conducted extensive rock face cleaning in the monastery's inner and outer courtyards, which are difficult to access. Rock faces were cleaned over an area of 6,350 square meters in the outer courtyard and 1,225 square meters in the inner courtyard, eliminating potential risks.
A second-layer wire mesh application was made over an area of 935 square meters to prevent small rock falls in the inner courtyard's inverted roof section. Protective measures to increase visitor safety were reinforced. Repairs were made to the walking paths and stone pavement in the courtyard, which had cracked and broken. Additionally, the roof tiles of the ticket office building at the monastery entrance were renewed to maintain the structure's safety and aesthetic integrity.
