The tiny island state of Nauru in the Pacific Ocean has made a historic decision to change its name to the Republic of Naoero to return to its national language and identity.The country's official name has been changed to the Republic of Naoero to preserve the original spelling and pronunciation in the local language. President David Adeang announced that the country's international abbreviation has been updated from NRU to NRO following the constitutional amendment.It is known that in the past, the local name was preferred as "Nauru" in the external world because it was difficult for foreigners to pronounce, but this was due to ease of use rather than the people's demand.President David Adeang emphasized that the aim of the constitutional amendment proposal he presented in January is to honor the cultural heritage. Although a referendum was initially planned for the decision, which passed two votes in parliament in May, it was announced that a public vote was not needed after comprehensive consultations.
