Fourth Eruption of the Month at Taal Volcano

The Taal Volcano in the Philippines has experienced its fourth eruption this month. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the eruption occurred at 14:29 local time and lasted for approximately three minutes. The eruption spewed ash and steam-rich plumes that rose to about 2,000 meters above the crater and drifted southeast. Phivolcs reported that similar eruptions occurred on July 12, 16, and 17. The institute stated that phreatomagmatic eruptions are caused by the interaction of magma and water, resulting in the ejection of ash, steam, and fragmented volcanic material into the atmosphere. According to Phivolcs' 24-hour monitoring report, three volcanic earthquakes and two volcanic tremors were recorded around the volcano. The volcano emitted 142 tons of sulfur dioxide gas in a day, and short-term inflation was observed. Despite the increased activity, the Alert Level 1 remains in effect for Taal Volcano, indicating low-level unrest. Authorities reminded the public that entry to Taal Volcano Island, boat travel on Taal Lake, and low-flying aircraft are prohibited due to the risk of sudden steam explosions, volcanic earthquakes, light ash fall, and hazardous gas emissions.
