Super Typhoon Bavi Approaches Taiwan: Experts Warn of ‘Extraordinary Season’

As the 2026 typhoon season in the Northwest Pacific is expected to be one of the most active in recent years, Taiwan is on high alert due to the approaching Super Typhoon Bavi. According to the July forecast by the UK-based weather forecasting agency Tropical Storm Risk (TSR), the region is expected to see 28 tropical storms, 19 typhoons, and 12 intense typhoons between June and November. These numbers are significantly higher than the 30-year average of 25.5 tropical storms, 16 typhoons, and 9.3 intense typhoons. Experts say the main reason for the season's extraordinary activity is the strong El Nino event developing in the Pacific Ocean. As scientists continue to warn of the dangers, Super Typhoon Bavi is moving towards Taiwan with winds of approximately 200 kilometers per hour and a diameter of around 1,000 kilometers, comparable to the width of France. Extraordinary measures have been taken across the island. Residents in coastal areas prone to flooding and low-lying regions have been called to evacuate, and the public has been advised to seek safety in secure shelters. Many domestic and international flights have been canceled, and some cities have suspended education and work in schools and public institutions.
