Super Typhoon Alert: Evacuations Accelerate in Guam and Northern Mariana Islands

The US territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are on high alert due to the approaching Super Typhoon Bavi. Authorities have warned of destructive winds, massive waves, and a high risk of severe flooding. The US National Weather Service (NWS) announced that Super Typhoon Bavi is expected to hit Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday. On the island of Guam, with a population of approximately 170,000, five evacuation centers have been opened in schools. However, authorities reported that one of these centers quickly reached capacity, and citizens were redirected to other centers. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) of the US Navy classified Bavi as a 'super typhoon', predicting that wind speeds will increase further when it reaches the islands. It was noted that Bavi will be the 11th Category 4 or 5 tropical cyclone to affect US territory in the last 10 years. Meanwhile, it was recalled that Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which hit the region in April, caused the deaths of 17 people and approximately $1.5 billion in damage.
