Starmer’s New Goal: NATO Secretary General

Following his resignation as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer is now preparing to run for the position of NATO Secretary General. With the current Secretary General, former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, set to leave office in 2028, Starmer aims to succeed him. However, Starmer’s candidacy will not be determined by public opinion polls, but rather by diplomatic agreements among member countries. This means that the process will likely unfold behind closed doors, with lengthy negotiations.Initially, Starmer stated that he would devote his time to his family after his resignation. Nevertheless, according to recent reports in the Western media, he intends to remain active on the international stage after leaving Downing Street.Notably, recent NATO Secretary Generals have typically been former prime ministers. Prior to Rutte, former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg held the position for an extended period. For Starmer to have a realistic chance, he will need to secure diplomatic support, as his own willingness alone is insufficient.
