Former Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina Vows to Return Home Despite Death Sentence

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed has announced that she will return to her country to face trial despite being sentenced to death. Hasina denied allegations that she ordered the killing of protesters during the 2024 protests that led to her departure from the country. The protests in Bangladesh began in July 2024, following a decision to allocate quotas in the public sector for the children of those who participated in the 1971 Independence War.Hasina suggested that an investigation by independent foreign forensic experts into the protests would reveal the truth, and emphasized the need to determine which weapons and ammunition were used to shoot the protesters. Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia in November 2025 and also received prison sentences for corruption charges.
