Hidden Danger Behind Healthy Eating: Pesticide Residues

Hidden Danger Behind Healthy Eating: Pesticide Residues
A recent study has revealed that the increasing cases of lung cancer among young non-smokers may be linked to pesticide residues on healthy foods rather than the foods themselves. The research, conducted by the University of Southern California (USC) Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, focused on lung cancer cases in people under 50 who do not smoke. The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). The study found that the patients consumed more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains than the average American. However, the researchers believe that the cause may not be the healthy foods themselves, but rather the pesticide residues on these products. It was noted that non-organic fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may contain more pesticide residues than dairy products, meat, and many processed foods. Previous studies have also shown that agricultural workers who are exposed to pesticides for extended periods have a higher risk of lung cancer. The study also found that non-smoking women under 50 are more likely to develop lung cancer than men of the same age group. It was also observed that women in this age group consume more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The study examined 187 people who were diagnosed with lung cancer before the age of 50. The majority of the participants had never smoked, and the disease was found to be biologically different from lung cancer caused by smoking. The researchers evaluated the participants' diets using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). The average score of the patients was 65, while the national average in the US was 57. The researchers emphasized that the amount of pesticides in the food consumed by the participants was not directly measured, but rather estimated based on previously published average residue data. They also noted that the current findings do not prove that pesticides cause lung cancer, but rather suggest a possible link that needs to be confirmed through further comprehensive clinical studies.
