Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir: Twin Earthquakes in Venezuela
Earthquake scientist Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir evaluated the twin earthquakes in Venezuela. Sözbilir shared his views on the earthquakes that occurred 39 seconds apart. The Director of the Earthquake Research and Application Center of Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ), Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir, stated that destructive earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 6.5 may occur in Venezuela, where 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes occurred on June 24.

These earthquakes are defined as twin earthquakes in terms of seismology. Seismological data show that the earthquakes developed with a right-lateral strike-slip faulting mechanism at the border of the Caribbean and South American plates, and there was a displacement of at least 3 meters between the plates during the earthquake.

Prof. Dr. Sözbilir emphasized that the twin earthquakes that occurred in Venezuela took place at the border of the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates, and such events are significant in terms of seismology.
