Pesticide Exposure May Increase ALS Risk by Up to 71 Percent

A new study has found that exposure to pesticides in the workplace may increase the risk of developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study, published in the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine, combined data from eight separate studies. According to the analysis, people who were exposed to any type of pesticide in their workplace had a higher risk of developing ALS compared to those who were not exposed. The study found that exposure to herbicides in particular may increase the risk of ALS. The researchers noted that they analyzed a total of 1,734 ALS cases from the eight studies, making it one of the largest analyses to date. However, the study also acknowledged that other risk factors associated with ALS, such as head trauma or exposure to other toxic substances, may have affected the results. The researchers emphasized that while the findings suggest a strong link between pesticide exposure and ALS, they do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
