Peru Annuls 15-Year Prison Sentence for Former President Humala

The Peruvian Constitutional Court has annulled the 15-year prison sentence handed down to former President Ollanta Humala for money laundering and declared the entire criminal proceedings invalid. Humala, who served as President of Peru from 2011 to 2016, was found guilty in 2025 of receiving illicit funds from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht and former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to finance his election campaigns. Following Humala's appeal, the Constitutional Court ruled that the criminal proceedings were legally invalid. According to local news reports, Humala is expected to be released from the Barbadillo Prison in Lima shortly. Humala's wife, Nadine Heredia, who is also a founder of the Peruvian Nationalist Party, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the same crime. However, she sought refuge in the Brazilian Embassy in Lima after the verdict and was granted safe passage to Brazil.
