Massive Forest Fire Near Paris: Nearly 900 Homes Evacuated

A massive fire in the Fontainebleau Forest, about 60 kilometers southeast of Paris, has led to the evacuation of nearly 900 homes. Authorities describe the fire as "exceptional" in scale, and firefighting planes have been deployed from the south of France to aid in the effort. The fire, which began on Sunday, has affected an area of approximately 800 hectares of forest, with French authorities characterizing it as "exceptional" and "very violent". According to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, around 900 homes have been evacuated due to the fire, with no reports of any homes being destroyed or casualties. An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched, with Nuñez stating that the flames started at around 10 different points on Sunday, raising the possibility of arson. The fire has also resulted in the temporary closure of parts of the A6 highway, a major north-south transportation route. Disruptions have been reported in high-speed train services to and from the Gare de Lyon station in Paris, with French Railways (SNCF) reporting delays of up to 8 hours on some routes. The fire is being tackled by around 400 firefighters, as well as firefighting planes, two helicopters, and a reconnaissance plane. According to Eric Brocardi, spokesperson for the French National Federation of Firefighters, this is the first time that firefighting planes have been deployed from the southern region of France to combat a fire in the Paris region. Authorities have warned that it may take days or even weeks to bring the fire completely under control.
