A Harsh Criticism for Nolan's The Odyssey

Classic philology expert and translator of Homer's Odyssey into English in 2017, Emily Wilson, has harshly criticized director Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated The Odyssey film. Wilson stated that the film does not convincingly portray time, memory, history, war, or the relationships between a warrior and his family, friends, and enemies, and lacks psychological, emotional, political, and ethical depth. Despite Nolan's praise for Wilson's translation, particularly the first sentence 'Tell me about a complicated man', the academic expressed strong disapproval of the film's screenplay. In an interview with the Sunday Times, Wilson expressed that the film did not have an emotional impact on her, saying 'It's not a well-written film like Homer's work. The characters are not as deep as in the epic, and I didn't really care about the hero's decision to return to his wife.'
