Chadian Political Scientist Comments on Niger’s Withdrawal from ICC: Court Applies Selective Justice

Niger’s decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) is seen as a long-standing frustration finally turning into action. Chadian political scientist and former Justice Minister Prof. Ahmat Mahamat Hassan stated that criticisms of the ICC are not limited to Niger, but have also been building up in many other African countries.Hassan emphasized that the ICC primarily targets Africa and shields major powers.

The ICC has become a judicial system that only targets weak countries, without touching major powers. Its authority is de facto limited to African countries.

The court’s selective justice focuses on weaker nations, particularly African states.

It seems that crimes are only considered crimes when committed by African leaders. When other leaders commit the same acts, the UN Security Council turns a blind eye and condones them.

The Chadian expert stressed that the ICC needs a fundamental reform to maintain its international legitimacy and become a truly just and inclusive institution.
